To “liberate” the state from God’s truth is to surrender man to the state’s “truth.” God and truth are always to be found in the source of law: if the state is itself the source of law, then it is truth and God incarnate. As courts deny the concept of a higher law in their jurisprudence, they thereby claim to be that highest law itself. Government rests on authority, and authority in its ultimate form is certain and infallible authority. If God’s infallible word is denied, the concept of infallibility is not denied. It is instead transferred to the historical process as it incarnates itself in the dictatorship of the proletariat, or it is transferred to the scientific method in its ultimate forms. For Benedetto Croce, the aesthetic experience became, in a sense, sacred, blameless, and uncensurable, and the bearer of inerrancy and inspiration. Infallibility is ascribed either to God or to the mind or activity of autonomous man. (pp.162-163).

In pursuing the myth of unlimited power, and in offering to the people a mythical unlimited liberty, the modern state posits its own god-like and infallible power to control history and to mold it to its intended decrees. But this is to live in terms of a suicidal delusion. Man can, as God’s creature, live only in terms of limited power and limited liberty as exercised under God’s sovereignty and word. To assume more is to live in terms of an impossibility. The fact that for a time it seems to “work” is itself a delusion. The man who believes that he can flap his arms and fly will certainly find it a fast and simple flight, as he leaves the Empire State Building, until he meets the hard earth. No less a destiny faces modern man and his state. (p.163)
